Sulphur Crested Cockatoo
Cacatua galerita
One of Australia's favourite pets, they are very clever and affectionate birds. They are also very noisy and require a lot of attention and can create bad neighbours from their habitof screeching in the early morning. These birds are not endangered and are a pest in farming areas where they dig up crops of planted grain. They have been observed in flocks of over 1000 birds.
They are knownfor their warning system. One will be on the look out as the flock feeds and will screech when danger is sensed. They eat seeds, nuts, vegetable matter and fruit. They also dig for grubs and consume all sorts of insects.
